LIC sells three child plans in 2026. We compare their ages, premium terms, payouts and the premium waiver rider, using the same child and the same sum assured.
The quickest LIC policy status check online is through LIC's customer portal or the MyLIC app, where registered users see every policy's status, next due date and bonus. Without registering, SMS LICHELP followed by your policy number to 9222492224 or 56767877, or call LIC's call centre on 022-6827 6827. WhatsApp (8976862090) works once your policy is registered on the portal.
An LIC policy status check online takes under a minute once you know where to look. The customer portal and the MyLIC app give the most detail, an SMS or a call works without any registration, and WhatsApp is handy once you have signed up. The status you see, such as in force, lapsed, paid-up or matured, tells you whether your cover is active and what you will get back.
This guide walks through all six methods and explains each status in plain language. We are an independent website, not LIC, so always treat LIC’s own records as final.
What you need before you start
Keep these handy whichever method you use:
- Policy number (9 digits, printed on the policy bond and every premium receipt).
- Mobile number and email registered with LIC. Most digital services send an OTP to this number.
- Date of birth of the life assured.
- Instalment premium, for first-time portal registration. Enter it without tax, as printed on the bond. Older bonds may show a tax line; individual life insurance premiums have been GST-exempt since 22 September 2025, so the base premium is what you pay now.
6 ways to check LIC policy status
| Method | Registration needed? | What you see | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Customer portal (licindia.in) | Yes, one-time | Status, due dates, bonus, loan, receipts | Full details for all policies |
| MyLIC app | Yes (portal login) | Same as portal, on your phone | Regular checks and payments |
| SMS (LICHELP) | No | Basic policy information | Quick check without internet |
| Call centre | No | Status and due details read out | Questions and help |
| WhatsApp (8976862090) | Yes, portal registration | Status, premium due, bonus, loan quotes | Fast chat-based check |
| Branch | No | Full policy record | Lapsed or disputed policies |
1. LIC customer portal
The customer portal is the most complete option. Go to licindia.in, open the customer portal and choose the new user option if you have not registered yet. You will be asked for your policy number, instalment premium (without tax), date of birth, mobile number and email, and you confirm with an OTP. Once you log in, add all your policies to the same account.
The dashboard lists each policy with its status, sum assured, next due date, mode of payment and bonus. From the same screen you can download a premium paid statement, check a loan quotation and pay premiums.
2. MyLIC app
In April 2026 LIC launched the MyLIC app for policyholders, available on Android and iOS. It brings the portal’s services to your phone: policy details and status, premium payment, receipts, loans, KYC updates and claims tracking. Log in with your portal account. Install it only from the official store listing published by LIC, and never through a link sent by SMS or WhatsApp. Our LIC app guide explains what to look for.
3. SMS
No smartphone or internet? LIC’s contact page lists an SMS help service. Send:
LICHELP <policy number> to 9222492224 or 56767877
Send it from the mobile number registered with LIC so the reply matches your records. Your operator may charge a normal SMS fee. Many websites still quote older keyword codes for bonus, loan or revival details. We could not confirm those on LIC’s own site, so start with LICHELP and use the portal or call centre for anything more.
4. Call centre
LIC’s call centre number is 022-6827 6827 (+91-22-6827 6827 from abroad). LIC says the service runs 24×7 in English, Hindi and eight regional languages. An automated menu handles common requests, and you can ask to speak to an executive. Keep your policy number ready. LIC staff will never ask for your portal password, OTP or card PIN, so do not share them.
5. WhatsApp
LIC runs a WhatsApp service on 8976862090 for customers registered on the portal. Save the number, send “Hi” from your registered mobile and choose from the menu. Options include premium due, bonus information, policy status, loan eligibility and repayment quotations, and a premium paid certificate. Since May 2025 the same chat can also take premium payments; see our guide to LIC premium payment online.
6. Your servicing branch
The branch that services your policy is printed on the bond and receipts. Take your policy number and a photo ID. The branch is the best place if your policy has lapsed for a long time, if the online status looks wrong, or if you need a revival quotation with medical requirements explained.
What each LIC policy status means
The exact label can vary slightly between the portal, app and SMS, but these are the statuses you will meet most often.
| Status | What it means | Cover and bonus | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| In force | All premiums due so far are paid, or the latest is within the grace period | Full sum assured; bonuses keep being added | Keep paying on time |
| Lapsed | A premium was not paid even after the grace period, before the policy built a paid-up value | Cover usually stops | Revive as soon as possible |
| Paid-up | Premiums stopped after the policy acquired a paid-up value | Reduced sum assured; new bonuses usually stop | Keep it, revive it, or compare with surrender |
| Fully paid-up | All premiums for the premium paying term are paid; the term is still running | Full cover continues | Nothing to pay; wait for maturity |
| Matured | The policy term has ended | Maturity benefit payable | Complete the maturity claim |
| Surrendered / claim settled | Policy closed early, or a death claim has been paid | Policy has ended | Nothing further |
The grace period is what keeps a policy “in force” after a missed due date. For yearly, half-yearly and quarterly premiums it is generally 30 days, and for monthly premiums 15 days. Your policy document states the exact period.
Lapsed vs paid-up depends on how long you paid. A policy needs a minimum number of full years’ premium before it has a paid-up or surrender value: usually two years for plans sold roughly between 2014 and September 2024, three years for many older plans, and as little as one full year for policies issued from 1 October 2024. Stop paying before that point and the policy lapses. Stop after it and the policy becomes paid-up with this value:
Paid-up value = sum assured × (premiums paid ÷ premiums payable) + bonuses already added
Our guide to LIC surrender value rules explains how paid-up and surrender values are linked.
Worked example: reading a “lapsed” status
Meena, aged 35, bought a New Endowment 914-type policy in March 2020 with a ₹5 lakh sum assured, a 20-year term and a yearly premium of ₹24,617 (from our calculator). She paid six premiums, from 2020 to 2025, then missed the one due on 15 March 2026.
| Date | What happened | Status she sees |
|---|---|---|
| 15 March 2026 | Premium due | In force |
| Up to about 14 April 2026 | 30-day grace period | In force |
| From mid-April 2026 | Grace period over, premium unpaid | Lapsed or paid-up (her policy has a paid-up value) |
| March 2040 | End of term | Matured, if revived and kept up |
Because she paid more than two full years, her policy did not simply die. We ran her details through our surrender value calculator, assuming an average bonus of ₹42 per ₹1,000 a year:
| Item | Estimate |
|---|---|
| Premiums paid (6 years) | ₹1,47,702 |
| Reduced sum assured (₹5,00,000 × 6/20) | ₹1,50,000 |
| Bonuses already added (₹42 × 500 × 6) | ₹1,26,000 |
| Paid-up value, payable in 2040 | ₹2,76,000 |
| Surrender value if she exits now | ₹1,07,038 |
| Maturity if she revives and keeps paying | ₹9,45,000 |
The maturity figure comes from the plan calculator with the same bonus rate and a final additional bonus. If Meena revives within a couple of months, she pays the missed ₹24,617 plus interest. At an assumed late-payment rate of 9.5% a year, two months’ interest is only about ₹390. Reviving restores the full ₹5 lakh cover and future bonuses, which is worth far more than the ₹2,76,000 paid-up value. You can test your own bonus assumptions with our LIC bonus calculator.
Tip: set a calendar reminder a week before each due date and check the status again after paying. A payment that has not reached LIC’s records is the most common reason a paid policy shows as due.
Common problems and fixes
- Policy not showing on the portal: add it from the dashboard. It must be linked to your date of birth and mobile number in LIC’s records. If details do not match, update them at the branch.
- Status still shows “due” after paying: online payments usually reflect quickly, but allow a few working days for other channels. Keep the receipt or transaction ID.
- No SMS reply: check the format, use the registered mobile number, or switch to the call centre.
- Policy shows lapsed but you paid: take the receipt to your servicing branch and ask them to trace the payment.
- Policy shows lapsed or paid-up and you want it back: see our guides to LIC lapsed policy revival and LIC paid-up value to compare reviving it with keeping it paid-up.
- Policy shows matured: start the claim. Our LIC maturity claim process guide lists the documents, and the LIC maturity calculator gives a rough idea of the amount.
Stay safe while checking status
Fraudsters often call policyholders claiming that a policy has lapsed or that a bonus is waiting to be released for a “fee”. LIC does not ask for fees to be paid into personal bank accounts or UPI IDs. Never share your portal password, OTP or UPI PIN, and use only LIC’s official website, app, WhatsApp number and call centre listed on licindia.in.
Key takeaways
- The customer portal and MyLIC app give the fullest view of your policy status; SMS and the call centre work without registration.
- WhatsApp on 8976862090 needs portal registration first.
- In force means fully covered. Lapsed means cover has usually stopped. Paid-up means reduced cover continues. Matured means it is time to claim.
- The grace period is generally 30 days (15 days for monthly premiums).
- If your policy shows lapsed, ask for a revival quotation early; the longer you wait, the more interest you pay.

Frequently asked questions
How can I check my LIC policy status by policy number?
Send an SMS in the format LICHELP followed by your policy number to 9222492224 or 56767877, ideally from the mobile number registered with LIC. You can also call LIC's call centre on 022-6827 6827 and give your policy number. For full details such as bonus and due dates, register on the customer portal or the MyLIC app.
Can I check LIC policy status without registering?
Yes. The SMS service, the call centre and your servicing branch all work without a portal account. You only need your policy number and, at the branch, a photo ID. The portal, MyLIC app and WhatsApp service need a one-time registration, which gives you much more detail.
What does 'in force' mean in LIC policy status?
In force means all premiums due so far have been paid, or the latest one is still within the grace period. Your full sum assured is covered, bonuses keep being added on with-profit plans, and you can use features such as a policy loan if the plan has a surrender value.
What is the difference between a lapsed and a paid-up LIC policy?
A policy lapses when a premium is not paid even after the grace period. If it lapses before it has a surrender value, cover usually ends. If it had already run long enough to build a paid-up value, it continues as a paid-up policy with a reduced sum assured and the bonuses already added.
Can I see my LIC policy status on WhatsApp?
Yes, if your policy is registered on LIC's customer portal. Save 8976862090, send 'Hi' from your registered mobile number and pick the policy status option from the menu. The same chat shows premium due dates, bonus details and loan quotations.
My LIC policy shows lapsed. What should I do?
Check how long ago the first unpaid premium was due and ask LIC for a revival quotation on the portal, app, call centre or branch. Traditional plans can usually be revived within a set period, often up to five years, by paying the arrears with interest. Revive early, because the cost and paperwork grow with time.
