LIC SIP Calculator: Estimate SIP and Lump Sum Returns with Yearly Step-Up

Financial ToolsUpdated:
Quick answer

A SIP calculator estimates what a fixed monthly investment could grow to at an assumed yearly return. This one also handles lump sums and a yearly step-up. Example: ₹5,000 a month for 10 years at 12% could grow to about ₹11,61,695 from ₹6,00,000 invested. Raising the SIP by 10% every year lifts it to about ₹16,87,163. Returns are not guaranteed.

What does the SIP calculator do?

A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) means investing a fixed amount in a mutual fund every month instead of trying to time the market. The hard part is picturing where those small amounts end up after 10 or 20 years. This calculator shows you. Enter the monthly amount, the period and an expected return. You see the maturity value, how much you invested, the estimated returns and a year-by-year growth table.

It also covers two other common cases:

  • Lump sum: a one-time investment left to compound.
  • Step-up SIP: a SIP you raise by a fixed percentage every year, for example in line with salary hikes.

People often search for an “LIC SIP calculator” when they are looking at LIC Mutual Fund schemes. The maths is the same for any fund house, so you can use this tool for any SIP. We are an independent site, and the figures here are illustrations, not promises.

How the calculation works

Monthly SIP. Each instalment is invested at the start of the month and grows at the monthly rate (annual return ÷ 12). For a flat SIP, this is the standard formula:

Future value = P × [((1 + i)ⁿ − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i)

where P is the monthly amount, i the monthly rate and n the number of months.

Step-up. The calculator runs month by month and raises the SIP by your step-up percentage at the start of each new year.

Lump sum. Future value = amount × (1 + annual return)^years.

In every case, estimated returns = maturity value − total invested.

Worked example

Scenario (12% a year) Invested Estimated returns Value
₹5,000 a month, 10 years ₹6,00,000 ₹5,61,695 ₹11,61,695
₹5,000 a month, 20 years ₹12,00,000 ₹37,95,740 ₹49,95,740
₹5,000 a month + 10% step-up, 10 years ₹9,56,245 ₹7,30,918 ₹16,87,163
₹1,00,000 lump sum, 10 years ₹1,00,000 ₹2,10,585 ₹3,10,585

Two lessons stand out:

  1. Time does the heavy lifting. Doubling the period from 10 to 20 years doubles what you put in, but the final value is more than four times higher. Most of the growth comes in the later years.
  2. Step-ups add up. With a 10% yearly step-up, the SIP reaches about ₹11,790 a month by the tenth year. You invest about ₹3.56 lakh more, and the final value rises by about ₹5.25 lakh.

Tip: start with an amount you can keep up through bad months, then add a step-up. A SIP you continue for 15 years beats a larger one you stop after three.

How big can a ₹10,000 SIP get?

Here is a ₹10,000 monthly SIP at an assumed 12% a year over different periods:

Period Total invested Estimated value
5 years ₹6,00,000 ₹8,24,864
10 years ₹12,00,000 ₹23,23,391
15 years ₹18,00,000 ₹50,45,760
20 years ₹24,00,000 ₹99,91,479
25 years ₹30,00,000 ₹1,89,76,351

Every extra five years roughly doubles the value, even though you only add ₹6 lakh each time. Use this to pick a period that matches your goal. For a child’s college fund 15 years away, for example, ₹10,000 a month points to about ₹50 lakh at this return.

How to read the results

  • Maturity value: the estimated value at the end of the period, before tax.
  • Estimated returns: growth on top of what you invested.
  • Total invested: the sum of all your instalments or the lump sum.
  • Money multiplied by: maturity value ÷ amount invested, a quick measure of compounding.
  • Monthly SIP in the final year: shown for SIPs; with a step-up this is higher than your starting amount.
  • Donut chart: invested vs returns.
  • Year-wise table: your invested total, gains and value at the end of every year. Use it to check where you should be at a milestone.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Don’t treat the return rate as fixed. Equity funds can fall 20–30% in a bad year. The calculator assumes a smooth average, while real returns come in bumps. Test 8% or 10% as well as 12%.
  • Match the fund to the goal. Equity suits goals more than 7 years away. For goals within 3 years, debt funds or deposits are safer. Compare with the FD calculator.
  • Remember costs and tax. Expense ratios reduce returns, and gains are taxed on redemption. Direct plans have lower expense ratios than regular plans.
  • Keep insurance and investment separate. A SIP has no life cover. If your family depends on your income, take a term plan first. If you want investment and cover in one product, read about LIC’s unit-linked SIIP plan 752 and compare its charges carefully.
  • Don’t stop SIPs in a falling market. Falling prices mean each instalment buys more units, which helps long-term returns.

Frequently asked questions

What is an LIC SIP calculator?

It is a tool that estimates the future value of regular monthly investments, such as a SIP in a mutual fund scheme from LIC Mutual Fund or any other fund house. You enter the amount, period and expected return, and it shows the invested amount, estimated gains and final value.

How much will ₹5,000 a month in SIP become in 10 years?

At an assumed 12% yearly return, ₹5,000 a month for 10 years could grow to about ₹11,61,695. You invest ₹6,00,000, so estimated gains are about ₹5,61,695. Over 20 years the same SIP could reach about ₹49,95,740 on ₹12,00,000 invested.

Is LIC SIP the same as an LIC insurance policy?

No. A SIP is a way of investing in mutual funds. LIC Mutual Fund is run by a separate asset management company in the LIC group. LIC's insurance plans, including unit-linked plans like SIIP, are different products with life cover and their own charges.

What return rate should I use in a SIP calculator?

Use a conservative figure. Many planners assume 10–12% for diversified equity funds over long periods, 7–8% for hybrid funds and 6–7% for debt funds. Past returns do not guarantee future results, so also test a lower rate.

What is a step-up SIP?

A step-up SIP raises your monthly amount by a fixed percentage every year. With a 10% step-up, ₹5,000 becomes about ₹11,790 a month by year 10. The calculator shows that this lifts the 10-year value to about ₹16,87,163 at 12%.

Is SIP better than lump sum?

A SIP suits monthly income and spreads your purchases across market ups and downs. A lump sum invested early gets more time in the market. ₹1 lakh invested once for 10 years at 12% could grow to about ₹3,10,585. Choose based on when you actually have the money.

Are SIP returns taxable?

Yes. For equity funds, gains held over a year are long-term and taxed at 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh a year; shorter holdings are taxed at 20%. Most debt fund gains are added to your income. The calculator shows returns before tax.
