What is LIC Cancer Cover Plan 905?
LIC’s Cancer Cover (Plan 905) is a non-linked, non-participating, regular-premium health insurance plan. Unlike a hospital insurance policy, it does not reimburse bills. It pays fixed amounts when cancer is diagnosed, so the family can use the money for treatment, travel, lost income or loans.
LIC first introduced Cancer Cover in 2017. The version with UIN 512N314V03 dates from 2023. Available information indicates new sales of this version stopped around January 2025. Existing policyholders stay covered on their original terms, and the calculator above works for both checking an existing premium and understanding the benefit.

How the premium is calculated
LIC charges a rate per ₹1,000 of sum insured that depends on age, gender, option and term. The calculator uses the published rate table and fills in ages between the table points smoothly. Premium rates are guaranteed for the first five years, after which LIC may revise them.
There is no GST line. Individual health and life insurance premiums are exempt from GST from 22 September 2025. Before that, 18% GST was added to this plan’s premium.
Worked examples:
- A 35-year-old man, ₹20 lakh level cover, 25-year term: ₹3,880 a year. Paying half-yearly costs ₹1,960 per instalment.
- A 30-year-old man, ₹15 lakh, 30-year term: ₹2,535 a year.
- A 40-year-old woman, ₹20 lakh with increasing cover, 25-year term: ₹13,580 a year.
For ₹10 lakh level cover, a man pays about ₹2,830 at 40, ₹5,280 at 45 and ₹8,560 at 50. The premium chart below the calculator shows the full grid.
Tip: premiums climb steeply after 40. If a cancer cover fits your plans, buying in your 30s locks in a much lower rate for at least the first five years.
Cancer benefits
| Event | What LIC pays |
|---|---|
| Early-stage cancer (first diagnosis) | 25% of the applicable sum insured as a lump sum, plus premiums waived for the next 3 years or the rest of the term |
| Major-stage cancer | 100% of the applicable sum insured, less any early-stage payout, plus 1% of it every month for 10 years; all future premiums waived |
Take the 35-year-old man with ₹20 lakh cover. An early-stage diagnosis pays ₹5,00,000. A major-stage diagnosis pays ₹20,00,000 at once (₹15,00,000 if the early-stage claim was already paid), plus ₹20,000 a month for 10 years. Together that is ₹44,00,000 over the decade.
The monthly income continues for the full 10 years even if the policy term ends in between. If the life assured dies during this time, the nominee receives the remaining instalments.
Option II: increasing cover
Under Option II, the sum insured grows by 10% of the basic amount on each of the first five policy anniversaries, reaching 150%. It then stays level. If cancer is diagnosed first, the increase stops at that point.
For the 40-year-old woman with ₹20 lakh basic cover, a diagnosis in year 6 means an applicable sum insured of ₹30 lakh. Early stage pays ₹7,50,000. Major stage pays ₹30 lakh plus ₹30,000 a month for 10 years, or ₹66,00,000 in total.
Important conditions
- Waiting period: 180 days from the start or revival date.
- Survival period: the life assured must survive 7 days after diagnosis.
- Exclusions: include pre-existing cancer, HIV/AIDS-related conditions and conditions caused by alcohol or drug abuse. Read the policy document for the full list.
- Grace period: 30 days for yearly and half-yearly premiums.
- Free-look: 30 days to return a new policy.
- The policy ends after a major-stage claim is admitted, apart from the monthly income still due.
Tax benefits
Premiums qualify for deduction under Section 126 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (earlier Section 80D) (old tax regime), within the health insurance limits. Benefits received on diagnosis are generally not taxable.
Who is it for?
Cancer Cover suits people with a family history of cancer, the self-employed with no employer health cover, and anyone whose hospital policy would not cover lost income during long treatment. It does not replace regular health insurance or a term plan. It only pays for cancer. Compare it with LIC’s broader Jeevan Arogya 904, and check your life cover with our term plan calculator.

Frequently asked questions
What does LIC Cancer Cover 905 pay?
On early-stage cancer it pays 25% of the applicable sum insured and waives the next three years' premiums. On major-stage cancer it pays 100% of the sum insured (minus any early-stage payout), plus 1% of the sum insured every month for 10 years, and waives all future premiums.
Is there a maturity or death benefit in Cancer Cover 905?
No. It is a pure cancer protection plan. If no cancer is diagnosed during the term, nothing is paid at the end, and there is no death benefit except the remaining monthly income after a major-stage claim. There is also no loan or surrender value.
What is the waiting period in LIC Cancer Cover?
180 days from the start of the policy or its revival. A cancer diagnosed within this period is not covered and the policy ends. The life assured must also survive at least 7 days after diagnosis for a claim.
How much is the LIC Cancer Cover premium for ₹20 lakh?
According to our calculator, a 35-year-old man pays about ₹3,880 a year for ₹20 lakh level cover over 25 years. A 40-year-old woman choosing increasing cover pays about ₹13,580 a year. Rates are guaranteed for five years and can be revised after that.
What is the difference between Option I and Option II?
Option I keeps the sum insured level. Option II raises it by 10% of the basic amount every year for the first five years, up to 150%, and then keeps it level. Option II costs more but protects better against rising treatment costs.
Is LIC Cancer Cover 905 still available?
Available information indicates that new sales of this version stopped around January 2025. Existing policies continue on their terms. Check with LIC or an agent whether this plan or a revised version is on sale where you live.
Do I get tax benefit on LIC Cancer Cover premium?
Yes. As a health insurance plan, the premium qualifies for deduction under Section 126 (earlier 80D), within its limits, if you use the old tax regime. Claim payouts for critical illness are generally not taxable.
