What is LIC Single Premium Endowment Plan 917?

LIC Single Premium Endowment Plan 917 is a with-profit endowment policy where the entire premium was paid once, at the start. The policy then covers the life assured for the chosen term of 10 to 25 years and pays the sum assured plus bonuses at maturity. Its UIN is 512N283V02.

Plan 917 succeeded Plan 817, which LIC withdrew on 1 February 2020. It was itself replaced by Plan 717 on 1 October 2024. If you hold a 917 policy, nothing changes for you. The calculator above helps you check your maturity estimate and death cover.

How the 917 premium was calculated

The single premium comes from LIC’s rate table for your age and term. The calculator applies that rate per ₹1,000 sum assured, then deducts the high sum assured rebate.

Example: a 30-year-old buying ₹10 lakh for 20 years paid a single premium of about ₹5,08,750 after the ₹30-per-thousand rebate. A 40-year-old buying ₹5 lakh for 15 years paid about ₹2,99,825. GST of 1.8% applied on top at the time of purchase. From 22 September 2025, individual life insurance premiums are GST-exempt, but that only matters for new policies.

Tip: because the rebate steps up at ₹2 lakh and ₹3 lakh, a slightly larger sum assured could cost only a little more. Compare ₹2.9 lakh and ₹3 lakh in the calculator to see the effect.

Maturity benefit

At the end of the term the policyholder receives the basic sum assured, the simple reversionary bonuses added every year and a final additional bonus if declared. With an assumed bonus of ₹40 per ₹1,000 and a ₹15 FAB, the 30-year-old above could receive about ₹18,15,000 after 20 years. That is an approximate return (IRR) of about 6.6% a year on the single premium. The 40-year-old’s ₹5 lakh policy works out to about ₹8,07,500 after 15 years.

Your policy’s actual bonuses are shown in LIC’s bonus statements. Replace the default in the bonus field with the rates LIC has declared to get a closer estimate, or try our LIC maturity calculator.

Death benefit

If the life assured dies during the term after risk commencement, the nominee receives the sum assured on death, which is the higher of the basic sum assured or 1.25 times the single premium. Vested bonuses and any final additional bonus are paid on top. The year-wise table in the calculator shows how this amount grows as bonuses accumulate.

Loan and surrender

A loan can be taken against the policy after one year. The policy can also be surrendered at any time. LIC pays a guaranteed surrender value, which is a share of the single premium, or a special surrender value if that is higher. Leaving early rarely beats holding to maturity. Estimate your exit value with the surrender value calculator.

Tax treatment

The single premium was deductible under Section 123 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (earlier Section 80C) (up to ₹1.5 lakh) in the year of payment. Because a single premium is usually more than 10% of the sum assured, the maturity amount may not qualify for exemption under Section 11 read with Schedule II of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (earlier Section 10(10D)). Death claims are tax-free. Check your case with a tax adviser.

917 vs 717: what changed?

Plan 717 keeps the same structure: one premium, a 10 to 25-year term and bonuses. The differences are a higher minimum sum assured (₹1 lakh instead of ₹50,000) and higher premium rates. For ₹10 lakh at age 30 over 20 years, our estimate is ₹5,42,213 under 717 against ₹5,08,750 under 917. If you are buying today, use the Plan 717 calculator.
