What is LIC Single Premium Endowment Plan 817?

LIC Single Premium Endowment Plan 817 is a with-profit endowment policy in which the whole premium was paid once, when the policy started. In return, LIC covers the life assured for the chosen term (10 to 25 years) and, at maturity, pays the sum assured along with all bonuses added over the years.

The plan (UIN 512N283V01) was sold from 1 January 2014 and withdrawn on 1 February 2020. It was followed by Plan 917 and then by the current Plan 717. This page is mainly for people who already own an 817 policy and want to estimate what they will receive.

Premium used in the calculator

The single premium came from LIC’s rate chart for the entry age and term. For ₹10 lakh at age 30, our calculator gives about ₹8,40,000 for a 10-year term, ₹7,42,000 for 20 years and ₹7,02,000 for 25 years. Tax was charged on top at the time of purchase. From 22 September 2025, new individual life policies no longer attract GST, but that does not change a premium already paid.

If you already know your premium from the bond, you mainly need the maturity side of the calculator.

Maturity benefit

At the end of the term, LIC pays:

  • the basic sum assured,
  • simple reversionary bonuses added every year of the term, and
  • a final additional bonus, if declared.

Bonus rates for 2018-19 were about ₹41, ₹46 and ₹51 per ₹1,000 for 10–15, 16–20 and 21–25 year terms. Our example uses ₹46 for a 20-year policy of ₹10 lakh: bonuses of ₹9,20,000 plus an assumed ₹15,000 FAB give a maturity estimate of ₹19,35,000. On the ₹7,42,000 premium, that is an approximate return of about 4.9% a year.

A second example: someone who entered at 40 with ₹5 lakh for 15 years paid about ₹4,04,000. At a ₹41 bonus, the maturity estimate is about ₹8,15,000.

Tip: bonus rates change from year to year. For a closer figure, take the average of the rates shown in your LIC bonus statements and enter it in the bonus field. The LIC bonus calculator can help.

Death benefit

If the life assured dies during the term, the nominee receives the sum assured plus bonuses added up to that date and any final additional bonus. The calculator also applies a floor of 125% of the single premium, which matters mainly for policies bought at older ages. The year-wise table shows how the death benefit rises with each bonus. For a child, death before the risk commencement date leads to a refund of premium instead.

Loan and surrender

You can borrow against the policy or surrender it after the first year. If you need money urgently, a loan keeps the policy and its bonuses alive, while surrender ends it. Estimate the surrender amount with our surrender value calculator before deciding.

Tax treatment

The single premium was eligible for Section 123 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (earlier Section 80C) deduction in the year of payment, up to ₹1.5 lakh. Maturity is exempt under Section 11 read with Schedule II of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (earlier Section 10(10D)) only if the premium did not exceed 10% of the sum assured. With a single premium, it usually does, so part of the maturity amount may be taxable. Death claims are exempt.

Plan 817 vs later versions

All three share the same idea. The later versions mainly changed the premium rate tables and, in 717, raised the minimum cover. New buyers should look at Plan 717.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still buy LIC Single Premium Endowment Plan 817?

No. LIC withdrew Plan 817 on 1 February 2020. It was followed by Plan 917 and, from 1 October 2024, by Plan 717, which is the version on sale now. Existing 817 policies continue until maturity or claim.

What was the bonus rate for LIC 817?

For 2018-19 the simple reversionary bonus was about ₹41 per ₹1,000 sum assured for 10–15 year terms, ₹46 for 16–20 years and ₹51 for 21–25 years. LIC declares bonuses every year, so check your statements for the exact rates on your policy.

How is the maturity value of plan 817 calculated?

Maturity value = basic sum assured + simple reversionary bonuses for every year + final additional bonus, if declared. For ₹10 lakh over 20 years at ₹46 per ₹1,000, bonuses add ₹9.2 lakh, giving an estimate of about ₹19.35 lakh including an assumed ₹15,000 FAB.

What were the age limits in plan 817?

Entry age was 90 days to 65 years (nearest birthday). The policy had to mature between age 18 and age 75, and the term could be 10 to 25 years.

What is the minimum sum assured in LIC 817?

The minimum basic sum assured was ₹50,000, in multiples of ₹5,000, with no upper limit.

Can I surrender my 817 policy or take a loan?

Yes. Both loan and surrender became available after the first policy year. Since the premium was paid in full at the start, surrender value builds early, but it usually stays below the maturity value. Holding to maturity normally gives the best result.
