What is LIC Bima Bachat Plan 175?
LIC Bima Bachat Plan 175 was LIC’s first well-known single-premium money back plan. The idea was simple: pay one lump sum, receive part of the cover back every three years, and get your full premium back at the end, with life cover all along.
The plan (UIN 512N232V01) was sold from 18 August 2005 to 1 January 2014. LIC followed it with New Bima Bachat 816 and later New Bima Bachat 916. This page is written for existing policyholders who want to understand their payouts.

How the single premium was set
The premium was a share of the sum assured that rose with age and term. For ₹1 lakh cover the calculator shows about ₹66,840 at age 20 on a 9-year term, ₹72,490 at 30 on a 12-year term and ₹85,180 at 60 on a 15-year term.
Worked example: a 30-year-old bought ₹1,00,000 cover for 12 years.
- Single premium: about ₹72,490
- Money back: ₹15,000 at years 3, 6 and 9, which is ₹45,000
- Maturity at 42: ₹72,490 refund + loyalty addition
- With no loyalty addition, total received is ₹1,17,490, a return of about 5.3% a year
Tip: the calculator’s loyalty addition field is an assumption. Your actual figure depends on the rate LIC declared in the year of maturity, which is shown in your claim letter.
Maturity benefit
On survival to the end of the term LIC returns the single premium and adds the loyalty addition, if declared. The money back payments made earlier are not deducted.
Death benefit
The nominee receives the basic sum assured, plus loyalty addition if any. There is no deduction for survival benefits already paid, which made the plan attractive for families.
Loan and surrender
A loan was available after one policy year, up to 90% of the surrender value. Surrender was also possible, though early exit usually returned less than the premium. See our surrender value calculator.
Tax points
The single premium was far above 20% of the sum assured (the limit for policies issued from 2003 to March 2012), so money back and maturity amounts may not be fully exempt under Section 11 read with Schedule II of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (earlier Section 10(10D)). Death claims are tax-free.
Should you keep a Bima Bachat 175 policy?
Most 175 policies have already matured. Because sales stopped in January 2014 and the longest term was 15 years, the last ones mature by the end of 2028. If yours is still running, keeping it to maturity is usually the best choice: the premium is already paid, the remaining money back and the refund are guaranteed, and the life cover costs you nothing more. If a maturity claim is pending, submit the discharge form and bank details to your servicing branch.
Bima Bachat 175 vs New Bima Bachat
The newer versions kept the 9/12/15-year terms and 15% money back, but lowered the maximum entry age to 50 and set term-wise minimum covers. Check the money back policy calculator to compare with regular premium plans.
