What is LIC Anmol Jeevan Plan 153?

LIC Anmol Jeevan (Plan 153) was a pure term assurance plan, the first in LIC’s Anmol Jeevan series. It offered life cover for a fixed term at a low premium. If the life assured died during the term, the nominee received the sum assured. If the life assured survived, the policy simply ended, with no maturity value, bonus or surrender value.

The plan was withdrawn on 31 October 2003. The next day LIC launched Anmol Jeevan I (Plan 164), which continued the same idea with a higher age limit. Few Plan 153 policies are still running, but the calculator above lets you check what the premium was and how long cover lasts.

How the premium is calculated

The plan used a rate per ₹1,000 sum assured that rises with age and term. The calculator uses the published rate points for 10, 15 and 20-year terms and interpolates for ages in between. For terms shorter than 10 years it uses the 10-year rate, so treat those results as an upper estimate.

  1. Rate × sum assured ÷ 1,000 gives the tabular yearly premium.
  2. Yearly mode gets a 1% rebate. Half-yearly pays half the tabular premium each instalment.
  3. No GST is added: individual life policies are GST-exempt from 22 September 2025. Before that, term premiums carried service tax and, from July 2017, 18% GST.

Worked example: a 30-year-old with ₹10 lakh cover for 20 years pays about ₹2,990 a year, or ₹59,800 over the term. Cover runs until age 50.

A 40-year-old with ₹5 lakh cover for 15 years in half-yearly mode pays about ₹1,268 per instalment (₹2,536 a year).

Tip: if a Plan 153 policy is still running in your family, keep the premium receipts and nominee details together. A term claim is simple, but only if the policy is in force and the nominee is up to date.

Death benefit

On death during the term, with the policy in force, LIC pays the full sum assured to the nominee. As with most term plans, a suicide exclusion applied in the first year of the policy.

Tax benefits

Premiums qualified for deduction under Section 123 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (earlier Section 80C) (and under Section 88 before 2005). The death claim is tax-free under Section 11 read with Schedule II of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (earlier Section 10(10D)).

Frequently asked questions

Is LIC Anmol Jeevan Plan 153 still available?

No. Plan 153 was withdrawn on 31 October 2003. From 1 November 2003 LIC sold Anmol Jeevan I (Plan 164) instead, followed by Anmol Jeevan II (Plan 822) in 2014. None of these is on sale today.

What did Anmol Jeevan 153 pay on death?

If the life assured died during the policy term with premiums paid up, the nominee received the full sum assured as a lump sum. There was no bonus and no extra benefit on top of the sum assured.

Was there a maturity benefit in Plan 153?

No. Anmol Jeevan was a pure term plan. If the policyholder survived the full term, no money was returned. That is why its premium was much lower than an endowment plan with the same cover.

What was the premium for Anmol Jeevan 153?

Using the plan's rate points, a 30-year-old with ₹10 lakh cover for 20 years paid about ₹2,990 a year in yearly mode. A 40-year-old with ₹5 lakh cover for 15 years paid about ₹1,268 every half-year.

What were the age limits in Plan 153?

Entry age was 18 (completed) to 50 (nearest birthday), and the policy had to end by age 60. So a 40-year-old could choose at most a 20-year term, and a 50-year-old at most 10 years.

Can an Anmol Jeevan 153 policy still be in force?

Only if it was bought close to 2003 with a long term. A policy taken in 2003 for 25 years would run until about 2028. Most 153 policies have already completed their term.
