What is LIC Jeevan Tarang Plan 178?
LIC Jeevan Tarang (Plan 178, UIN 512N235V01) is a with-profit whole life plan that turns a limited period of saving into a lifelong income. It works in two phases:
- Accumulation period (10, 15 or 20 years): you pay premiums and the policy earns yearly bonuses.
- Payout phase: the accrued bonuses are paid out in one go, then 5.5% of the sum assured is paid every year until death or age 100, with the sum assured paid at the end.
LIC sold the plan from 7 March 2006 until 1 January 2014. Many policies bought in its final years are still in the accumulation phase, so this page is written for existing policyholders who want to check their numbers.

Premium and worked example
The calculator estimates the premium per ₹1,000 sum assured by age and accumulation period. The rate tables from the source we used were too low to pay for the plan’s benefits, so our figures are reconstructed from the benefit design and calibrated to a single-premium example of about ₹75,600 per ₹1 lakh at age 35. Your policy document shows the exact premium.
Example: a 30-year-old takes ₹10 lakh sum assured with a 20-year accumulation period and ₹42 bonus.
- Yearly premium: about ₹45,400, or ₹9,08,000 over 20 years
- Accrued bonus paid at age 50: ₹8,40,000
- Survival benefit: ₹55,000 a year from age 50 to 100, about ₹28 lakh in all
- Death cover: up to ₹18,40,000 during accumulation, then ₹10 lakh plus loyalty addition
Shorter accumulation periods cost more each year: the same cover is about ₹96,900 a year for 10 years or ₹63,200 for 15 years at age 30. There is no GST on the premium now: individual life premiums are exempt from 22 September 2025.
Benefits in detail
- End of accumulation: the full reversionary bonus is paid as cash. It does not stay in the policy.
- Survival benefit: 5.5% of the sum assured every year for life, even though no more premiums are due.
- Death after accumulation, or survival to 100: sum assured plus loyalty addition, if LIC declares one.
- Loan and surrender: available once the policy has a surrender value. Use our surrender value calculator before exiting early, as it usually costs you.
Tip: the survival benefit is fixed, so its real value falls with inflation. Many policyholders reinvest the lump-sum bonus to protect their future income.
Tax
Premiums were eligible for Section 123 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (earlier Section 80C). Survival benefits, the bonus payout and the death claim are generally exempt under Section 11 read with Schedule II of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (earlier Section 10(10D)) for policies that meet the premium-to-sum-assured conditions that applied when the policy was issued.
Replacement plans
LIC no longer sells Jeevan Tarang. Plans with a similar “pay for some years, get income for life” idea are Jeevan Umang 745, which is with-profit, and Jeevan Utsav 771, which is non-par with a guaranteed 10% income. Compare the income as a percentage of what you pay, not just the headline number.
How to use this calculator
- Enter your age at entry and choose the accumulation period.
- Pick regular or single premium and enter the sum assured.
- Adjust the bonus rate to a cautious or recent value.
- Read the premium, lump-sum bonus, yearly survival benefit and death cover, then check the year-wise table for when each payout arrives.
Frequently asked questions
Is LIC Jeevan Tarang 178 still available?
No. Jeevan Tarang was withdrawn from sale on 1 January 2014. Existing policies continue exactly as issued: premiums during the accumulation period, then survival benefits for life. New buyers looking for lifelong income can consider Jeevan Umang 745 or Jeevan Utsav 771.
What is the survival benefit in Jeevan Tarang?
After the accumulation period ends, the plan pays 5.5% of the basic sum assured every year while the life assured is alive, up to age 100. On ₹10 lakh sum assured that is ₹55,000 a year.
What happens to bonuses in Jeevan Tarang?
Simple reversionary bonuses are added each year of the accumulation period. The total accrued bonus is paid as a lump sum when the accumulation period ends. After that, no further reversionary bonus is added; a loyalty addition may be paid with the sum assured later.
What does the nominee get if the policyholder dies?
During the accumulation period, the nominee gets the sum assured plus bonuses accrued so far. After the accumulation period, the nominee gets the sum assured plus any loyalty addition. Survival benefits already paid are not deducted.
When does Jeevan Tarang mature?
It is a whole life plan, so there is no fixed maturity date. If the life assured reaches age 100, LIC pays the sum assured plus any loyalty addition, and the policy ends.
Can I take a loan against my Jeevan Tarang policy?
Yes. A policy loan is available once the policy has acquired a surrender value, subject to LIC's terms. The loan amount is a percentage of the surrender value at that time.
