What is LIC Jeevan Amrit Plan 186?

LIC Jeevan Amrit (Plan 186) is a with-profit endowment plan with an unusual shape: you pay premiums for only 3, 4 or 5 years, but the cover runs for 10, 20 or 30 years, and the life cover is large compared with the premiums. The first-year premium is about double the premiums that follow.

The idea was “high cover, short payment, money back with bonus”. The family gets the full sum assured if the policyholder dies during the term, while a survivor gets the premiums back with bonuses at maturity. The plan has been withdrawn, so this page is written for existing policyholders.

How the premium is calculated

LIC’s rate table gives two figures per ₹1,000 of sum assured: a first-year rate and a subsequent rate that is half of it. Both depend on age, term and premium paying term. The calculator interpolates between the listed ages instead of rounding to the nearest one, which gives smoother, fairer results.

Worked example: a 30-year-old takes ₹5,00,000 cover for 20 years and pays for 5 years. The first-year premium is about ₹18,138 and each of the next four years about ₹9,075, for a total of ₹54,438.

Short-term example: a 40-year-old with ₹10,00,000 cover for 10 years, paying for 3 years, pays about ₹1,01,525 in year one and ₹50,775 in each of the next two years (₹2,03,075 in all).

Tip: the plan’s value lay in the cover, not the return. ₹54,438 of premiums bought ₹5 lakh of life cover for 20 years.

Maturity benefit

At maturity LIC pays back the premiums paid plus the bonuses added each year. Bonus rates are declared by LIC and are not guaranteed, so the calculator lets you set an assumption. With ₹40 per ₹1,000 of premiums per year:

  • 30-year-old, ₹5 lakh, 20 years, 5-year payment: bonus about ₹43,550, maturity about ₹97,988.
  • 40-year-old, ₹10 lakh, 10 years, 3-year payment: bonus about ₹81,230, maturity about ₹2,84,305.

Check the bonus actually vested in your policy with LIC or use our bonus calculator.

Death benefit

If the life assured dies during the term, the nominee receives the full sum assured plus accrued bonuses. Because the premiums stop after a few years while the cover continues, the protection stays in place for the whole term with no further payment.

Loan, surrender and revival

  • Loan: available against the surrender value, as per policy conditions.
  • Surrender: possible once the policy acquires a surrender value; you give up the high cover. Try the surrender value calculator first.
  • Revival: a lapsed policy can be revived within five years of the first unpaid premium.

Tax benefits

Premiums qualified under Section 123 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (earlier Section 80C), and maturity and death proceeds are generally exempt under Section 11 read with Schedule II of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (earlier Section 10(10D)), subject to the premium-to-sum-assured conditions that applied when the policy was issued. There is no GST on individual life insurance premiums from 22 September 2025.

Alternatives for new buyers

For a short premium term today, compare LIC’s Limited Premium Endowment Plan 830 or a regular endowment plan calculator. If high cover is the main aim, a term plan costs far less.

  2. Enter the sum assured.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still buy LIC Jeevan Amrit 186?

No. Jeevan Amrit has been withdrawn and LIC no longer issues it. Existing policies continue until maturity or claim. For a current short-payment endowment, look at LIC's newer limited-premium plans.

Why is the first-year premium higher in Jeevan Amrit?

The plan was priced with a first-year premium roughly twice the later premiums. The higher first payment helps fund the large life cover, and the later instalments are half as much for the rest of the premium term.

What is the maturity benefit of Jeevan Amrit?

At maturity the plan returns the premiums paid plus the bonuses added over the term. In our example, ₹54,438 paid over 5 years grows to an estimated ₹97,988 after 20 years at an assumed bonus rate.

What is the death benefit?

If the life assured dies during the term, the nominee receives the full sum assured plus bonuses accrued till then. That is why the cover, for example ₹5 lakh, is many times the premiums paid.

Can I take a loan on a Jeevan Amrit policy?

Yes, a policy loan is available against the surrender value once the policy has acquired one, subject to LIC's conditions.

What happens if I miss a premium?

There is a 30-day grace period. After that the policy lapses, but it can be revived within five years from the first unpaid premium by paying the arrears with interest.
