What is LIC Bachat Plus Plan 861?

LIC Bachat Plus (Plan 861) was a savings plan that LIC offered for a short window: from 15 March 2021 to 1 April 2022 (UIN 512N340V01). Its selling point was flexibility in how you pay. You could put in one single premium, or spread it over five yearly premiums, and keep the cover and savings running for 10 to 25 years.

It is a participating plan, so on top of the basic sum assured you may receive a loyalty addition, declared by LIC at maturity. If you hold a Bachat Plus policy, the calculator above estimates what you paid and what you may receive.

Death benefit options

Premium type Option I Option II
Single premium 1.25 × tabular single premium 10 × tabular single premium
Limited (5 years) Higher of 7 × annualised premium or sum assured Higher of 10 × annualised premium or sum assured

Option II gives much higher life cover, especially for single premium, and the maximum entry age differed by option. Death within the first five years pays the sum assured on death; after that, the loyalty addition is added.

How the premium is calculated

Bachat Plus uses a rate chart by gender, age band and term:

  • Single premium is a rate per ₹1,000 of sum assured, less a large-cover discount: ₹25 to ₹50 per ₹1,000 for terms up to 20 years and ₹35 to ₹60 for longer terms, depending on whether the cover is ₹2 lakh, ₹5 lakh or ₹10 lakh and above.
  • Limited premium is a yearly rate per ₹1 lakh of sum assured, paid for five years.

Our calculator uses one rate chart for both death benefit options, so treat the Option II premium as a lower estimate. No GST is added: individual life premiums are GST-exempt from 22 September 2025. Policies bought in 2021–22 paid 4.5% GST on the single premium, which would have taken ₹2,81,500 to ₹2,94,168.

Worked example. A 30-year-old man chooses ₹5 lakh for 15 years.

  • Single premium, Option I: ₹2,81,500 paid once. Sum assured on death is ₹3,80,000.
  • Limited premium, Option I: ₹64,700 a year for 5 years (₹3,23,500 in total). Sum assured on death is ₹5,00,000.

Either way, maturity is ₹5,00,000 plus the loyalty addition. With an assumed ₹10 per ₹1,000 per year, that is ₹75,000, for a maturity of ₹5,75,000.

For a larger cover: a 35-year-old woman choosing ₹10 lakh over 10 years with single premium Option II pays about ₹8,39,500. Her life cover is about ₹88,95,000, and the maturity estimate is ₹11,00,000.

Tip: over short terms, a single premium buys very little growth. The same ₹10 lakh cover costs about ₹8.45 lakh for 10 years but only about ₹3.43 lakh for 25 years at age 30.

Maturity benefit

On survival to the end of the term, LIC pays the basic sum assured plus the loyalty addition, if declared. The loyalty addition is the plan’s only bonus and is not guaranteed.

Loan, surrender and revival

Loans of up to 90% of the surrender value are allowed once the policy acquires one. A policy that lapses under the limited option can be revived within five years of the first unpaid premium. See our surrender value calculator for how early exit values are worked out.

Tax benefits

Premiums qualify under Section 123 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (earlier Section 80C) (old regime). Maturity is tax-free under Section 11 read with Schedule II of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (earlier Section 10(10D)) only if the premium in any year does not exceed 10% of the sum assured. Single premium Option I policies usually fail this test, so the gain on maturity may be taxable. Death claims are always exempt.

How Bachat Plus compares

Bachat Plus sat between two familiar products. Against Single Premium Endowment Plan 917, it added the 5-year payment option and a choice of death cover. Against regular endowment plans, it asked for money up front and paid only a loyalty addition rather than yearly bonuses. For today’s options, try the LIC endowment plan calculator.
