Quick answer

LIC's Accidental Death and Disability Benefit (ADDB) rider adds extra cover to a base LIC policy. If you die in an accident, your nominee gets the rider sum assured on top of the base plan claim; if an accident leaves you permanently disabled, the same amount is paid monthly over 10 years. On a regular premium plan, ₹10 lakh of cover costs about ₹1,000 a year.

What is the LIC Accidental Death and Disability Benefit Rider?

The LIC Accidental Death and Disability Benefit Rider (UIN 512B209V02), often shortened to ADDB rider, is an optional add-on to an LIC life insurance policy. It is a non-linked, non-participating individual rider: it does not earn bonuses and has no maturity value. What it does is add a second layer of protection for one specific risk, accidents, at a very low cost.

The rider pays in two situations:

  • Accidental death: the nominee receives the rider sum assured in addition to the base plan’s death benefit.
  • Accidental permanent disability: you receive the rider sum assured yourself, spread as a monthly income over 10 years.

Because accidents are a leading cause of death and disability among working-age adults, this rider is one of the most commonly attached to plans such as Jeevan Labh 736 and Jeevan Lakshya 733.

Rider cover Same as base plan Until age 70
Accident benefit sum assured ₹10,000 Up to the base plan limit

The rider can be bought only at the same time as an eligible base plan and must follow its premium pattern. If the base plan is a single premium plan, the rider is also bought for a single premium.

How the rider premium is calculated

LIC prices this rider with a flat rate per ₹1,000 of accident benefit sum assured. Unlike the base plan, the rate does not depend on your age.

Premium type Normal occupation Police duty
Regular premium (per year) ₹1.00 per ₹1,000 ₹1.50 per ₹1,000
Limited premium (per year) ₹1.20 per ₹1,000 ₹1.80 per ₹1,000
Single premium, 10-year term ₹8.00 per ₹1,000 ₹11.95 per ₹1,000
Single premium, 20-year term ₹12.65 per ₹1,000 ₹18.95 per ₹1,000
Single premium, 30-year term ₹15.35 per ₹1,000 ₹23.00 per ₹1,000

For terms between these points the calculator interpolates. For monthly, quarterly and half-yearly payment, it applies the source factors of 8.88%, 26% and 51% of the yearly premium.

Example 1, regular premium. A 30-year-old adds ₹10 lakh of ADDB cover to a 25-year plan. The rider costs about ₹1,000 a year, or ₹25,000 over the whole term, and cover runs to age 55.

Example 2, single premium. A 40-year-old buys a single premium plan with a 20-year term and ₹5 lakh of rider cover. The one-time rider premium is about ₹6,325, and cover lasts until age 60.

Example 3, limited premium. A 35-year-old with a 21-year plan paying premiums for 15 years adds ₹5 lakh of cover and pays monthly. The rider adds about ₹53 a month (₹600 a year), or ₹9,540 in total.

Tip: because the rate is flat, the rider is cheapest relative to the base premium when you are older. A 50-year-old pays the same ₹1 per ₹1,000 as a 25-year-old, while their base life premium is much higher.

Benefits in detail

Accidental death benefit

If the life assured dies as a result of an accident within 180 days of it, the nominee receives the full accident benefit sum assured. This is paid over and above the base policy’s death claim. An accident here means bodily injury caused by outside, violent and visible means.

Accidental disability benefit

If an accident causes permanent total disability within 180 days, the rider sum assured is paid in 120 equal monthly instalments. With ₹10 lakh of cover that is about ₹8,333 a month for 10 years; with ₹5 lakh, about ₹4,167 a month. The monthly structure works like a replacement income while the family adjusts. Rider cover ends once the disability benefit becomes payable.

What is not covered

Accident riders of this kind typically exclude injuries that are self-inflicted, caused under the influence of alcohol or drugs, from participation in criminal acts, war or riots, and certain hazardous activities. Read the exclusions in your rider document before relying on the cover.

ADDB rider vs other LIC riders

  • The LIC Accident Benefit Rider covers accidental death only. ADDB also pays on permanent disability, which makes it the broader choice.
  • The New Term Assurance Rider adds cover for death from any cause, not just accidents. It costs more but fills a bigger gap.
  • For ULIPs, LIC offers a separate linked accidental death benefit rider.

Many buyers combine ADDB with a term rider or a standalone term plan: the term cover protects against illness, and ADDB adds extra money when an accident also brings disability costs.

Tax treatment

Rider premiums form part of your life insurance premium and can be claimed under Section 123 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (earlier Section 80C) in the old tax regime, within the overall ₹1.5 lakh limit. Death benefits paid to the nominee are tax-free under Section 11 read with Schedule II of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (earlier Section 10(10D)). The calculator adds no GST, in line with the GST exemption for individual life insurance from 22 September 2025.

Who should add this rider?

The ADDB rider makes the most sense if you:

  • commute daily by road or two-wheeler, or travel often for work;
  • are the main earner and your family would struggle if an accident left you unable to work;
  • want a meaningful jump in cover for a few hundred rupees a year.

It adds little if you already hold a large personal accident policy with disability cover, or if your work keeps you at home most of the time. Even then, at ₹1 per ₹1,000 it is among the cheapest ways to raise protection.

Frequently asked questions

What is the premium for the LIC ADDB rider?

On regular premium plans our calculator uses ₹1 per ₹1,000 of rider sum assured per year for normal occupations, so ₹10 lakh of cover costs about ₹1,000 a year. Limited premium plans use ₹1.20 per ₹1,000, and single premium ranges from about ₹8 to ₹15.35 per ₹1,000 depending on term.

What does the ADDB rider pay on accidental death?

The full accident benefit sum assured is paid to the nominee in addition to the base policy's death benefit, provided death occurs within 180 days of the accident. With ₹10 lakh base cover and ₹10 lakh rider cover, an accidental death claim pays ₹20 lakh plus any base-plan bonuses.

How is the disability benefit paid under the LIC ADDB rider?

If an accident causes permanent total disability within 180 days, the rider sum assured is paid in 120 equal monthly instalments over 10 years. For ₹5 lakh of cover that is about ₹4,167 a month.

Who can buy the LIC Accidental Death and Disability Benefit rider?

You must be 18 to 65 years old at entry and buy an eligible LIC base plan. The rider can only be added alongside that plan, and cover ends on the policy anniversary near your 70th birthday even if the base plan runs longer.

Can I buy more rider cover than my base plan sum assured?

Generally no. The accident benefit sum assured is usually capped at the base plan's sum assured, and LIC also applies an overall limit across all your policies. The minimum rider cover is ₹10,000.

Is the ADDB rider premium higher for police personnel?

Yes. People engaged in police duty pay about 50% more: ₹1.50 per ₹1,000 a year on regular premium plans instead of ₹1. For ₹5 lakh of cover that is about ₹750 a year instead of ₹500.

Is there GST on the ADDB rider premium?

Our calculator adds no GST, because individual life insurance premiums are GST-exempt from 22 September 2025. Before that date, LIC charged GST on rider premiums as well, so older receipts may show a higher amount.
