What is LIC New Jeevan Mangal Plan 819?

LIC New Jeevan Mangal Plan 819 is a small-ticket life insurance policy aimed at low-income households. It combines three things in one simple contract:

  • a fixed life cover for 10 to 15 years (or 5 to 10 years with a single premium),
  • an in-built accident benefit that doubles the payout on accidental death,
  • a full refund of premiums if the policyholder survives the term.

Plan 819 is one of the early New Jeevan Mangal versions that followed the original Jeevan Mangal 198. It kept the classic micro-insurance cover band of ₹10,000 to ₹50,000, which makes it different from New Jeevan Mangal 840 and 940, where cover could go up to ₹2 lakh. The plan is withdrawn; existing policies continue.

How the premium is calculated

The premium is a rate per ₹1,000 of cover that depends on age and term. For ₹50,000 cover, the calculator shows a yearly premium of about ₹2,943 at age 20, ₹3,008 at 30 and ₹4,180 at 50 on a 10-year term. A 15-year term is cheaper per year: about ₹1,908 at age 30.

Worked example: a 25-year-old takes ₹30,000 cover for 10 years and pays monthly.

  • Monthly premium: about ₹155
  • Total paid in 10 years: ₹18,600
  • Refund at age 35: ₹18,600
  • Death benefit: ₹30,000, or ₹60,000 for accidental death

Tip: monthly payment costs a little more than yearly because of the mode loading. If you can manage a yearly payment, you pay slightly less overall.

Maturity benefit

On survival to the end of the term, the full premiums paid are refunded, excluding taxes, extra premiums and rider charges. There is no bonus. With a single premium, the one-time amount is refunded; for example, about ₹8,963 paid at age 30 for ₹50,000 cover over 10 years comes back at age 40.

Death benefit

The nominee receives the higher of the sum assured or 105% of premiums paid till death. If the death results from an accident, an extra amount equal to the sum assured is paid, so ₹50,000 cover pays about ₹1,00,000.

Other points

  • No loan against the policy.
  • Revival of a lapsed policy within two years, with interest on arrears.
  • Tax: regular premiums usually qualify under Section 123 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (earlier Section 80C) (old regime), and the refund is generally exempt under Section 11 read with Schedule II of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (earlier Section 10(10D)).

Who is it useful for?

The plan was built for daily-wage workers, vendors and rural families who wanted to insure themselves without feeling that the premium was “lost”. If you hold one, keep it running to maturity. If you want bigger cover today, compare a pure term plan with our term plan calculator.
